The modding journey of the Volkswagen Golf R continues. I’m making the single most obvious modification that won’t void the manufacturer’s warranty, but deliver immediate and measurable improvement to the stock setup. What could that be? Tires. And what goes along with tires? Wheels. My stock setup of 19″ Cadiz wheels with Continental rubber is great and all, but the 19’s are a little challenging to drive where I live. Probably the biggest single reason is due to the poor quality of road conditions in and around our nation’s capital. My thought is that if I’m changing tires, I’d like to downsize at the same time to improve ride quality and handling. I think downsizing to 18’s with Michelin Pilot Sport or Pilot Super Sport rubber will be the best option for me. So the conundrum is which wheel to pair with the new Michelins? I know the color I want for the new wheels, black. I’m going with this color for a few reasons. With a tornado red body silver or graphite/gun metal are in my opinion not the best look. I think getting the new wheels in black is the best, plus it should also hide the break dust discoloring that happens on lighter colored wheels.
I like the design elements in the wheels utilized by the prototype classes in WEC and IMSA. And that look sort of got me checking out the wheels manufactured by O.Z. Racing, and wow are they not cheap. The trade off is performance does not come with a small price tag. It would be nice to find alternatives.
Check back for new tire-wheel combo, when I finally choose.
