It’s Fall here in the US, and that means a few things happen: football returns to our viewing schedule, apple picking picks up, the leaves begin their colorful transformation, and for those in the car enthusiast community the fairgrounds in Carlisle Pennsylvania hold event known as Fall Carlisle. It’s kind of big deal here on the East Coast. People bring their cars to sell at auction, collectors come to add to their collection, some come away with a new project car or tool, but most come away with at least one part connected to automobiles or motorcade such as vinyl records of cars and their sounds. You can spend the better of a day, and be certain you haven’t seen it all. My plan was to make it to this event. And I did just that, this past Saturday.
The show typically starts up mid-week with setup then opens in earnest on Thursday, and runs through Sunday. It precedes another great local event the following week, Hershey AACA Eastern Division Fall Meet. Maybe some time I’ll make it for that one. Most of the exhibitors at Carlisle often go up the road a few miles to Hershey the following weekend.
Saturday morning as my friends and I drove up from Maryland into Pennsylvania I was struck by how much rain we experienced, and how much more are we in for? As it turns out, quite a bit, but no amount of rain dampened our spirits as we pressed on. We arrived, and what struck me first was that people were not deterred by the threat of rain, but in this case the threat was more like a promise.
It was impressive as we walked aisle after aisle, and I came away with 3 observations: first, that all Dodge Darts find their way to Carlisle like salmon going upstream to spawn, second that all micro-buses follow Dodge Darts to Carlisle, and lastly Carlisle is for car-truck people period. All types of car enthusiasts could be found from television personalities (think Ted Vernon) to father-son duos experiencing the quintessential experience.
Bottom line, if you are a car enthusiast, and are in driving distance of Carlisle Pennsylvania you need to make a trip there to experience one of the many events held there throughout the year. You’d be hard pressed to find more classic cars, motor inspired art, a larger variety of Dodge Darts (they all end up in Carlisle), parts, tools, project cars, and related motor-cana items then you can at a fairground one weekend every Fall in Pennsylvania.
