EDIT: This post will be updated throughout the event as mother nature and connectivity allow in the great Smoky Mountains.
This post will be written from the perspective of a first time attendee, because well I am. I arrived yesterday in Fontana Village nestled within the Smoky Mountains in western North Carolina for the start of an annual Volkswagen enthusiasts event known as Wookies In The Woods or simply WITW for the initiated. Now this event is not for every model of VW, just the R variety.
My drive from DC down to NC was uneventful, and I had a small glimmer of hope to
meet up with other R’s on their way down for this annual gathering. I was surprised when I spied a MkV R heading just ahead of me, and thought they might be going my way. Sadly though it turned out that he was on his way to work. We conveyed mutual appreciation for both vehicles, and took the next exit off I-66.
Initially WITW started as a gathering of VW enthusiasts who all drove the iconic R32 model VW Golf. And as all things happen in the automotive world, interest grew, and the gathering became an event that is now run by some dedicated stalwarts in NC.
Wednesday/Day 1: Arrival. Made it from D.C. to NC. Checked into Fontana Village. Unpacked, and walked around to get my bearings.
Thursday/Day 2: First full day at Fontana. Everyone who is attending WITW should be arriving today. Weather predicted, predicted to change: wind picking up, and temperatures dropping. I made some runs on the Dragon and met some VW enthusiasts (what are the odds of that, right?).
Friday/Day 3: The guys I met yesterday agreed on a tour on Moonshiner 28, past Bridal Falls to The Highlands and back. Great time! Even though my brake pads needed to be replaced, and I was running on winter rubber. Really, there was so much to take in, and man is that 1 Series quick!
Saturday / Day 4: Still little to no cell reception, but that didn’t matter as the weather improved, and we participated in the Sound Off followed by a lengthy cruise on the Cherohala Skyway finished by a sunset run of the Dragon and Hellbender. Such a great day!!
