This trip starts just outside DC in Maryland, and runs parallel to the Potomac river. You pick up the trail just off I-270 heading North out of Washington, D.C. on Darnestown Road (28). It has the potential to last the entire day or become a weekend going all the way Cumberland.
You pick up Route 28, and head West. The route starts off in suburbia passing through Rockville, and a portion of Gaithersburg before arriving at Darnestown where it all starts to open up. Just before Darnestown you’ll come to the Lewis Orchard’s farm stand (outlet) on the right at the corner of Darnestown Road, and Peach Tree Road. Continuing on through Beallsville you make it to the small town of Dickerson, and presents an interesting side trip or stopover to explore the Monocacy Aqueduct and Canal park just on the other side of town turning onto Mouth of Monocacy Road. Side trip to the C&O Canal park complete, you retrace your way back to Darnestown Road which is now called Tuscarora Road (28). It should be noted there’s an old stone railway trestle that make for an interesting place to take a picture of your car, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Once you’re back on 28 headed West you’ll make a left when 28 splits off from Buckeystown Pike (85) to continue on through Tuscarora and onto Point of Rocks. Point of Rocks is a crossroads of sorts, you can continue on to Antietam or turn left and cross over the Potomac into the Commonwealth of Virginia on 15/501 for a scenic drive to Harper’s Ferry through Lovettsville.
Continuing on to Antietam take 15/501 North out of Point of Rocks to Point of Rocks Road (464) all the way to Brunswick. If you need a drink and some pub fare check out Smoketown Brewing Station or if you crave breakfast try out Penny’s Diner, and let me know how it rates. In Brunswick, pick up 9th Avenue until it “tees” at EA Street. Make that left and head again until that road “tees” at 10th Avenue. Take a right on 10th Avenue until it becomes E. Potomac Street, which will run parallel with the Potomac River. Heading along the perimeter of Brunswick you come to Petersville Road that will take you North (right turn) that cuts through the center of town. Take that until you meet up with 17 that will take you on to Burkittsville, of the Blair Witch Project fame. Take a left on W. Main St. to cut through the center of town and the name changes to Gapland Road. If you fancy a break, turn right on W. Main St./Gapland Road and sample some cider at Distillery Lane Ciderworks.
On the road again, back tracking a bit to the center of town on W. Main Street it changes names outside of town to Gapland Road, and takes you through Gathland State Park. Where Gapland diverges from Townsend Road you can make a slight detour to check out van Gilder Pottery. Continuing on Gapland Road until you reach the intersection of Rohrersville Road (67), and take a right there and stay on this two-lane road until it intersects with Trego Road on the left. Take that left, and in about a mile look to your left for wait for it…Trego Mountain Road. Turn left there, and continue on. The name changes again in 2 miles or so to Chestnut Grove Road. John Brown’s house on the right has been turned into a national historic landmark. Check it out if you’re needing a history fix.
Chestnut Grove Road ends at Harpers Ferry Road, turn right and take that about 4 miles into Antietam (2010 census population: 89).
