On this page you will find links to road trips I’ve taken/driven. I decided to document the great roads and trips I’ve taken for you the enthusiast. I recall looking for routes myself and having to check a variety of sources; car clubs, motorcycle riding pages, Google maps, and friends. I started out taking the various sources, and synthesize the various details into a single narrative; an overview of the route, a rating system for the roads, alternate routing when available, and finally a little insight into the Americana I encountered along the way. I’ve devised the R.A.S. system for grading road trips:
R is for Road
I’ve sort of crystallized what makes a good trip. It all has to start with the road, right? Since the road element is the most important element of the trip I feel it has to have 4 key components/variables: technical aspects (twisties/camber/sweepers), elevation changes, quality of tarmac, and length sufficient to enjoy the sensation.
A is for Americana
For a road trip to grade highly there has be a better than fair chance to experience some Americana along the way: festival/fair- natural or man made road side attraction (reservoir dam – biggest Paul Bunyan statue -largest non-stick frying pan), drive in theatre, alpine slides or an automotive event/icon (track-famous garage-car meet/show-etc…).
Next comes scenery, I mean you don’t want to be driving COTA next to a water treatment facility do you?
S is for Scenery
Some might argue weather should also be the mix, but having driven in sunny, cloudy, rainy, stormy weather anything short of a hail, tornado or hurricane weather is secondary.
Grading Road Trips
This is still fluid, but my feeling is at this point that each element can be awarded 1-3 points. # points is best, 2 is average, and 1 means it is lacking. The combined total for these three elements yields a best score of 9.
If you drive any of these routes it would be supremely beneficial to get your take and R.A.S. score, and suggestions to test a new route or make the process even better.
