Part 3 of this wonderful
saga project is to determine which route to take on my driver’s holiday. I’m getting excited just typing this post! Also, I need to consider which route I can fit into a normal vacation (7-10 days) without feeling like I have to take a sabbatical. Given my location in the DC area, I have 3 obvious and truly wonderful choices.
First off is the Northeast loop up to the Finger Lakes with stops at Watkins Glen and Palmer Motorsports Park in one of America’s great commonwealths’s, while the next route involves touring the Southeast with stops at VIR and Tail of the Dragon, and last but not least heading to the Midwest, and visiting the temple of speed of the US, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Also in contention were both the West Coast and Southwest, but realistically the West Coast could not be a contender for this trip. I was tempted to consider the Southwest route, paying a visit to the site of the Lone Star LeMans, COTA. After looking into it a bit more, unless I plan to fly out there, and pick up a rental car I’m not sure that I can make it out there, given that it’s over 1,500 miles one-way, have a good drive, and make it all the way back to the East Coast without seeming like I’d just finished a Cannonball Run. I think I’ll save that route and the West Coast’s canyon carving roads for another day! No worries! I know when it comes down to logistics, points of interest (Americana), race-speed landmarks, and cool roads the three routes I’m contemplating offer the best opportunity to have a kick-ass road trip!
Ok, so the finalists are: Nirvana in the Northeast, Snaking through the Southeast, and Motoring in the Midwest. Hmm, which one to choose? If anyone has suggestions or recommendations of great sights, car shows-events, roads or tracks along any of the 3 routes please share them with me! Your input will be greatly appreciated!
